The Christmas bells are ringing at Disney World! November may be just a few days away, but the most magical place on Earth is already gearing up for Santa Claus with lots of treats and good cheer.

Part of the Christmas spectacle at Disney World is the gingerbread creations that show up at Walt Disney World Resorts. Chief among them is the Grand Floridian Gingerbread House, a life-size gingerbread house filled with festive cast members ready to serve up holiday treats.

We were on the scene when the first “elves” appeared to assemble this year’s gingerbread house at the Grand Floridian. From baseboard to roof, we watched these hardworking workers assemble one of the largest gingerbread houses this side of the North Pole.

You may not be surprised to learn that this life-size treat isn’t gingerbread all the way. A base of thin building materials is first constructed to support the many shingles and gingerbread trim that make up the exterior.

Bring home a piece of magic (or eat it before you even step out of the lobby) with the purchase of a gingerbread shingle, just like the ones in the house.

What is the Grand Floridian Gingerbread House made of?

While the basic structure of the Grand Floridian Gingerbread House is made of inedible materials, these parts are accessory compared to the huge amount of gingerbread in shingles, around doors and on awnings.

Each year, signage typically accompanies the greatest gingerbread feats across the Disney resort to let guests know how much love, care, and eggs have gone into the creations.

The Grand Floridian Gingerbread House 2022 panel lists these heavy ingredients:

  • 1,050 pounds of honey
  • 140 pints of egg whites
  • 600 pounds of sugar
  • 700 pounds of chocolate
  • 800 pounds of flour
  • 35 pounds of spices

The sign displayed for the 2022 Gingerbread House also lists the most important ingredients: “Tons of creativity, Disney magic and pixie dust!”

That’s a lot of honey, right? Well, guess what: when the gingerbread racks come down, the sweet exterior is actually given to the bees at the end of the season. All those wooden pieces with sweet snacks still stuck on are laid out on the Disney tree farm for the bees to enjoy!

The Contemporary Resort changes its gingerbread display, but each year it’s an art style by Mary Blair that pays homage to the Disney favorite. Cinderella and Frozen are our favorite displays so far. We can’t wait to see what’s to come in 2022!

Do you smell chocolate?

It’s impossible not to when you’re less than 10 feet from this giant life-size Santa Claus chocolate display at the Walt Disney World Swan Hotel. The display has been taking place since 2010 and includes a 7-foot-tall, 400-pound nutcracker.
